Maddie

Maddie's deep gold/russet tone earned her the Irish name

Maddie is a gorgeous girl. Approximately 22" high at the shoulder, Maddie's gentle, giving nature makes her a crowd pleaser wherever we go. A rambunctious pup, we selected Maddie as our obedience school girl. Not only did she graduate with honors, we're continuing her training as a therapy dog. She's quick to listen and has a great smile, a typically happy Golden that loves to run, play and snuggle.

Her rusty coat has a gold underlay and red/gold fringe. She is a true home and hearth dog, loving nothing more than cuddling in the living room with any available human. Her deep-toned coat is a great mix with Mick's deep red over ivory. Some of their pups are pictured on the Home page. Gorgeous babies. We're looking forward to Maddie's next litter in summer, '09.

Ruthy had no trouble picking out Maddie from the breeder in Cohocton, New York. Maddie's warm red tones were exactly what Ruthy sought as we began this process. Having seen a full grown, russet-toned Golden Retriever a few years back, Ruthy knew when the time was right, that's the kind of dog she wanted to raise and breed.

Before starting this project, Lacey hooked us up with some very good books on dog training and Golden Retrievers.
We realized that crate-training is a wonderful thing.
We realized that Golden's are innately curious, funny, and enjoy a good tug of war.
We also realized that we needed to be tough from the beginning, showing that WE were the 'big dogs', as the books advised.
It worked.
Our Goldens are responsive, anxious-to-please, easy-going and demonstrative love-dogs. Big lap dogs. When we took them to our wonderful Hilton veterinarian, Dr. Dean Snyder of Apple Country Veterinary, he walked into the examining room where three full-grown dogs had replaced the cute pups he'd innoculated, probed and played with last year. Each dog sat with its handler, watching and waiting, smiling their "Golden" smiles as he checked them over individually. When he'd completed his exam he cocked a friendly brow my way...
"When you came in last year with these pups I thought you were crazy." Then he grinned. "I'm still not sure you're NOT crazy, but these are absolutely beautiful animals."
Crazy or not, our family has combined efforts to make this endeavor a successful reality.

For a great Golden Retriever read by beloved English vet Dr. James Herriot, read chapter 10 of his Favorite Dog Stories. That chapter chronicles a gentle woman's patience and love and the dog that benefited from both. I love this story.
